Melinda Gates has reacted to the recent killing of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and the five officers who were killed in the line of duty in her hometown of Dallas. She said she is hearbroken with the news she got and wish it will never repeat again because all lives have equal value—that black lives matter. She wrote,
"I’m heartbroken for the families of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, and I’m heartbroken for the families of the officers who were struck down in the line of duty in my hometown of Dallas. All of the lives we lost were precious. It has been a tragic week for our country.
Bill and I started our foundation because we were taught by our parents that all lives have equal value. For anyone who holds that principle sacred—and for anyone who abhors inequality—it is devastating to see that even in this country, even in 2016, some lives are treated as though they matter less than others.
Let’s keep standing up and speaking out and insisting that all lives have equal value—that black lives matter. Let’s turn toward each other instead of letting divisions drive us apart. And let’s channel our hurt and our heartbreak toward building a version of our country and our world that lives up to its promise. #BlackLivesMatter"
